Is AMC Stubs A-List Worth It?

Movie theaters are open and more movies are making their way back to the big screen today rather than being able to stream them at home. If you’re comfortable heading back to the movie theater, you may consider signing up for an AMC Stubs A-List Membership

The movie membership is a great way to save money on seeing movies and you can even hook up with friends who are also members so you all get the same reservations to see the same movie.

For frequent moviegoers it can be a great deal, but here’s everything you must know about it before deciding.

What is AMC Stubs A-List?

For one monthly fee, you can see up to three movies a week at an AMC theater. There are no blackout dates and your benefits start over every Friday morning so you can make new reservations each week.

You might be thinking, who sees three movies a week, right?

That seems excessive, but in most areas, if you use the membership at least twice a month, you come out ahead. If you see more than two movies a month, the membership more than pays for itself.

But you always have the option to see as many as three movies a week, which if you are an avid movie watcher, could be a great deal. It’s like seeing movies for free, so why not?

How Does it Work?

To be an AMC Stubs A-List member, you pay a monthly fee, like a subscription. Each month that you are a member you can make reservations for movies as soon as the day they are released. You can make reservations online or via the AMC mobile app.

You can see up to three movies a week. It can be three movies in one day if you’re in that kind of mood or three movies spread out throughout the week.

There aren’t any blackout dates and you can watch a movie in any AMC theater near you.

New AMC Stubs A-List members must commit to a three-month membership. After the three months, you are on a month-to-month membership and can cancel at any time, but you cannot cancel within the first three months.

What are the Benefits of AMC Stubs A-List?

Besides being able to see three movies a week, for a total of 12 movies a month, AMC Stubs A-List memberships have other perks too.

Reserve Tickets with Other A-List Members

You can join the ‘A-List Entourage’ of friends or family who are Stubs A-List members and you can all make your reservations together. To do this, you must first join the same entourage. This gives you both permissions to book tickets on one another’s behalf.

Watch Movies in any Format

A-Listers can watch movies in any of the AMC formats including:

  • Dolby Cinema
  • Imax
  • RealD 3D
  • Prime
  • 2D Digital

Get AMC Premiere Perks

AMC A-Listers get all the benefits AMC Premiere members get including:

  • 10% back on food and drink purchases
  • Free upgrades on popcorn and drinks
  • VIP lanes at the box office and concession stand for faster service

Earn AMC Points for any Extra Tickets or Concessions Purchased

If you buy tickets for friends or family to join you or you pay for concessions, you’ll earn AMC points on your purchases which you can use for other rewards in addition to your three movies per week.

Free Birthday Gift

All AMC Stubs A-List members receive free popcorn and free large drink for their birthday.

No Ticket Fee

AMC A-Listers don’t pay any service fees when they book their tickets online. This is the case even if they buy extra tickets for others in their group.

One Free Popcorn Refill

All A-Listers get one free same-day popcorn refill on a large popcorn. Since you also get a free size upgrade on your popcorn, it makes sense to get large and get a refill while you are there.

What’s the Cost?

To decide if an AMC Stubs A-List membership is worth it, you must know the cost. The cost varies based on the state you live in, but in most states, it costs $23.95/month, but in a few states it’s $19.95 or $21.95/month.

How AMC Stubs A-List Compares

AMC offers a couple of other membership options. It’s worth comparing them side-by-side to see which is right for you.

AMC Stubs Insider

AMC Stubs Insider is a program anyone can join for free. As a member, you earn 20 points per dollar spent versus 100 points per dollar spent as an A-Lister. You earn points on all box office and concession stand purchases.

You can redeem your points when you reach a $5 certificate which you can use toward food or beverage.

The membership costs nothing and you get cashback for your purchases, but you don’t get the perks the A-List membership offers like three ticket reservations per week or earning 100 points per dollar spent.

AMC Stubs Premiere

The AMC Stubs Premiere membership costs $15 a year but it comes with a few more benefits than the Insider membership.

With the Premiere membership, you get 100 points per dollar spent just like the A-list membership. You also get the free birthday gift of a free large popcorn and fountain drink and any online service fees are also waived.

Any points you earn also don’t expire for 2 years from the date of your last use, which is nice if you take a break from the theater for a while.

Can you Cancel the AMC Stubs A-List Membership?

You can cancel your AMC Stubs A-List Membership once you have had it for 3 months. There’s a 3-month commitment when you first join.

If you decide to cancel, you must cancel it within 5 days of your next billing date to avoid being charged for another month.

To cancel your membership, go to ‘View Plan Details’ in your A-List dashboard. Next click on ‘Cancel Plan’ and follow the instructions. Keep in mind, once you cancel you cannot rejoin for 6 months but you will automatically become an Insider (the free account).

FAQs – AMC Stubs A-List Membership

How many tickets do you get with an AMC A-List Membership?

The AMC A-List membership is per person. You get one ticket for the person who owns the membership. That person can have up to three tickets per week, but if you have anyone else in your family that wants the membership too, they must sign up for their membership. You can join memberships in an ‘entourage’ so you can make reservations for one another but each person must have their membership.

What happens if you don’t show up to a movie reservation you made?

If you made a reservation but you didn’t make it in to see the movie, it still counts as one of your reservations for the week. If you used up all three reservations you must wait until Friday morning when your reservations reset and you can make more reservations.

Can you play for AMC Stubs A-List for a year?

The AMC Stubs A-List membership is a monthly subscription. At this time they don’t offer an annual price. You are on the hook for three months when you first sign up but then can cancel at any time after that as long as you give them 5 business days’ notice before your next billing date.

When are you billed for your AMC A-List membership?

The day you signed up for the AMC A-List membership is your billing date. If you signed up on December 5th, for example, you would get billed on the 5th of every month. If you wanted to cancel, you must do so five business days before the 5th. Keep in mind, though once you cancel you cannot join again for 6 months.

Final Thoughts – Is AMC Stub A-List Membership Worth It?

The AMC Stub A-List membership can be worth it for the right movie-goer. It’s not that costly when you look at the big picture IF you go to the movies often.

How often you go to the movies determines if you should sign up for the program. If you don’t regularly visit the movies at least twice a month, you’d lose money on the subscription. But, if you enjoy seeing all the latest movies as soon as they come out and know that you’d commit to at least twice a month, you would likely save money using the membership.

  1. Great idea on paper. Clunky app at best. Check out #AListHelp on Twitter and you will see many complaints on members being unable to get tickets even after allocated tickets are used. Some members are unable to get any tickets at all. Since this Twitter account is the only way to bring up problems, it takes some time to have issues resolved.

  2. The program sucks! I’ve had a membership for 10 months and have used two tickets. My account always showed me as an Stubs insider and not Stubs Alist. I stayed because I believed they were working on fixing the problem. It got fixed this month. I asked that they credit me by extending my membership for an additional six months. They refused to do anything except refund my most recent payment.

I haven’t spoken to one person who has not had some kind of problem with their membership. I encouraged about ten of my family and friends to join. Theywillbe wuitting with me. NO ABSOLUTELY NOT – IT’S NOT WORTH IT!
