We all love Target, even just walking through the aisles and letting Target tell us what we need can be fulfilling, right? But then there’s the cost factor. Are you saving enough money when you shop at Target?
Some say Walmart is better, yet many people are loyal to Target. How do you get the best of both worlds?
You price match at Target! They have a length price match policy, but the bottom line is if you do everything right, they’ll match the lower price saving you money and allowing you to shop at Target.
Here’s what you must know.
What is the Target Price Match Policy?
The good news is that Target price matches. Hooray! But how?
They don’t make it too complicated. Target has a list of 29 stores they’ll price match with (I share this below). If you find a lower price at any of these stores either on their website or in a printed ad, you show it to the cashier at Target or call Target customer service if you’re shopping online and you’ll either get the lower price when you checkout or they’ll refund you the difference.
They make it fairly easy to get the lower price, unlike other stores, but they still have rules and exclusions.
How Does it Work?
First, to know how Target’s price match policy works, you must know the stores they’ll price match with – the list is lengthy which is good for shoppers. It includes:
- Amazon
- Bed Bath and Beyond
- Best Buy
- Barnes and Noble
- Buy Buy Baby
- Costco
- CVS
- Diapers.com
- Dicks
- Gamestop
- JcPenney
- Kmart
- Kohls
- Macys
- NewEgg
- Office Depot
- Petco
- Petsmart
- Sam’s Club
- Sears
- Staples
- Ulta
- Walgreens
- Walmart
- Wayfair
If you can find the exact item you’re purchasing for a lesser price on one of these sites or a store ad, you can price match at Target. The product must be exact though, which includes the model, features, color, size, and style. The price must also be current – it can’t be an expired ad or deal.
If you find a deal on a ‘deal website’, like Koopy, it must be validated on the retailer’s actual website to ensure its validity. If you use a printed ad, make sure you bring the entire ad or show the digital version on your phone in its entirety.
The item must also be in stock both at Target and the store you’re price matching and Target reserves the right to limit the number of price matches you get per day.
What are the Exclusions?
Like most price match policies, Target has exclusions, starting with any Target store in Hawaii or Alaska will not price match.
Other exclusions include:
- Clearance or closeout
- Damaged or refurbished product prices
- Doorbusters or Lightning sales
- Pricing due to a retailer’s error
- Marketplace pricing from third-party sellers
- Items containing alcohol (in some states)
- In-store price matches from other Target stores
How to Request a Target Price Match?
Now here’s the important part – how do you request a price match? The process you use depends on how you’re shopping.
Shopping Online at Target.com
If you’re shopping online at Target and find a lower price elsewhere, call Target Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869. The customer service representative will help you get the lower price, usually by refunding you the difference after verifying it’s an exact match from a qualifying retailer.
Shopping In-Store at Target
It’s very easy to get a price match when you’re shopping in-store at Target. If you find a lower price before you checkout, bring in the proof. Since most people have smartphones, it’s easy to pull up the ad or website and show the cashier. Most associates can approve a price match unless it’s a big difference, then they may need to call management.
If you already bought the item and found a cheaper price after the fact, bring your receipt and the ad or your phone with the website/ad on it to Guest Services. If they approve the price match, they’ll refund you the difference for up to 14 days after purchase.
How to Increase your Chances of Getting a Price Match at Target?
To get your price match approved at Target, it’s best to be prepared. Target has some of the most lenient guidelines, so it’s easy to get a price match, but here are some tips to make it easier.
- Make sure the products are identical. For example, you can’t price match a 20-ounce product with a 15-ounce product. Some stores have items made exclusively for them, so make sure this isn’t the case and price match only identical items down to the color.
- Have proof of the lower price. Target is lenient when it comes to proving the lower price, but having the entire ad from the competitor or accessing the retailer’s website with the full details of the product will speed the process up and ensure you can get the price match.
- Check the prices of any high-priced items you bought for 14 days. Target will adjust your price for 2 weeks after buying it, so if it’s a high enough priced item, consider shopping around even after you bought it to see if you can catch it on sale somewhere else.
- Make sure the item is in stock at competitors. If you are price matching a product at another online store, make sure it’s in stock. If it’s out of stock, Target doesn’t have to price match it. But there’s an exception. If you’re price matching an item from Target.com to an in-store purchase, you don’t have to worry if it’s in stock.
