Target vs. Walmart Price Comparison: Which is Cheaper?

When it comes to shopping at Walmart or Target, people have some serious feelings on the matter. You are usually either team Target or team Walmart all the way.

While many people swear Walmart has significantly lower prices, others claim they don’t care if they have to pay more for what they see as a better shopping experience.

We’ve put together some data to see what the price differences are on popular name-brand products at these two retail-titans.

We are comparing online store prices for each store, and this price comparison is being conducted in April of 2021 from the Midwestern area of the United States.

Target vs. Walmart Price Comparison Summary

No time to go through the entire article? We’ve summarized our findings here:

CategoryTargetWalmartSavings
Groceries$44.61$44.280.7%
Health and Beauty$36.64$36.101.5%
Electronics$289.95$295.822%
Pet Care$53.55$53.180.7%
Baby$70.26$70.160.1%
Total Cart Price$495.01$499.540.9%

Our findings show that Target did provide a cheaper cart price (by a very small margin), however, this is mainly due to the fact that the electronics category consists of a high percentage of the total cart price.

The electronics category is the only category where Target is providing a lower price compared to Walmart, in all other categories Walmart is the winner.

So when looking for the absolute lowest price, go for Walmart, expect when shopping for electronics, where Target would be your spot for the lowest price.

Target vs. Walmart: Pet Care Price Comparison

Pets are a huge part of many people’s lives. They are our best friends and the sweetest members of our families. It’s no wonder that economists are projecting that people will spend $99 billion on pet care in 2021. A fair share of that spending will happen at Walmart and Target so let’s see how their prices compare.

Target vs. Walmart: Services and Perceptions Comparison

While the two stores are similar in many ways, including price as it turns out, there are some significant differences in their services. Shopper’s perception of the two stores also plays a role in why people choose to shop there.

There is a popular perception in pop culture that Walmart has lower prices but also cheaper quality. Target is seen as the upper-class solution for all-in-one shopping experiences. The stores are brighter and usually cleaner and better organized. They carry higher quality clothing and often have Starbucks kiosks in them, further catering to the upper-middle class.

On the other hand, Walmart has a reputation for having an “anything goes” dress code and a much more casual approach. But if that perception comes from pricing, then it couldn’t be further from the truth. The two stores are actually very close in price in many areas.

FAQs About Target And Walmart

How do Walmart and Target compare to Amazon in price?

The three giants are in tough competition with each other, and because of that, their prices have started to inch closer to each other. While all three are similar in price for brand name items across the board, one area where you can save considerable money by shopping on Amazon is electronics and kitchen appliances. The savings can be as much as 10% on these items.

How can you find additional savings for Walmart and Target?

Both Walmart and Target take manufacturer’s coupons in addition to their in-store deals. You can also find online coupon codes for Walmart and Target to save additional money.

Who donates more money to charity, Walmart or Target?

While Walmart gives away more money and products to charity each year, Target gives a larger percentage of their profit (4.7% vs. Walmart’s 4.1%). Again, they are similar in their charity, just like they are in their consumer product pricing.

Can you get eye exams at Walmart or Target?

Many Walmart stores have leased space to licensed Optometrists and offer eye exams and glasses for people with and without insurance. Target does the same but in far fewer locations. The prices are similar, with Target’s average eye exam between $65-$75 and Walmart’s being between $68-$79. Frames are cheaper on average at Walmart than Target.

Final Thoughts: The Price Gap Between Target And Walmart Isn’t As Big As You Think

When it comes to brand name items that are easy to compare side-by-side, Walmart consistently prices their products two to four cents lower than Target. This leads to the illusion of cheaper prices when the difference between two average and similar carts is very slim.

Some categories are more difficult to compare, such as their house brands and clothing. On these fronts, Walmart does have deeper price cuts, but the quality, especially when it comes to clothing, is lacking.

Walmart saves lots of money on clothing by manufacturing their own overseas with poor working conditions and quality. They have also been slammed by the media for keeping costs low by paying unfair wages. This is another reason some people choose to shop at Target despite the extra pennies.
