How Does the Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Work and is it Worth It?

If you shop at Office Depot or OfficeMax, you must sign up for the Office Depot Office Max Rewards program. It’s free and it pays you to shop there.

You won’t get rich using the program, but every penny counts, right? Here’s how the program works and why you must sign up for it.

What is the Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Program?

The Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards program is a free program that rewards Office Depot and Office Max loyal customers. Each time you shop, you’ll earn 2% back in rewards on most items in the store.

You can also earn rewards for other tasks and get access to special savings. You’ll receive a rewards certificate each month as long as your earnings are at least $3. While 2% isn’t a lot, since it’s $2 for every $100 you spend, you can use the money toward your future purchases. If you own a business, are a teacher, or work from home, it’s a must.

There are two ways to become an Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards member.

All Members

Everyone starts off at the basic membership and earns:

  • 2% cash back on most purchases in-store and online
  • Exclusive savings
  • $2  in rewards if you recycle ink and toner – up to 10 a month
  • $2 in rewards if you post reviews – up to 3 per month

You just say you want to sign up for the program and you can. You don’t have to have certain qualifications – everyone qualifies.

VIP Members

You can work your way up to VIP status once you sign up for a regular account. Once you spend at least $500 in 365 days, you become a VIP member. This membership is also free and gets all of the benefits above plus:

  • 5% back on case or ream paper, ink, toner, and copy services
  • Free delivery on all orders no minimum purchase required
  • Exclusive VIP member benefits

You can become a VIP member 30 days after you hit the $500 threshold and you keep your VIP title for the next 12 months.

VIP members earn $5 for every $100 spent.

What can you NOT Earn Rewards On?

You can earn rewards on just about anything you purchase at Office Depot or OfficeMax with the following exceptions:

  • Marketplace items
  • Postage stamps
  • Gift cards
  • Services (except copy services as a VIP member)

How do you Enroll in the Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Program?

To join the Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards program, you must have an online Office Depot account. If you don’t have one, don’t worry – it’s free and you can click here to sign up.

If you already have an account, follow these steps:

  • Log into your account
  • Click Account
  • Click My Rewards
  • Join the Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards program

If you joined the program in-store, you can link your membership number using these same steps so you can earn rewards online and have access to your reward certificates on the app for ease of use.

How to Earn Rewards on Ink and Toner Recycling

You can earn rewards when you recycle up to 10 ink and toner cartridges each month. To be eligible, you must spend at least $10 in the store that month.

You can recycle as many cartridges as you want, but you’ll earn a $2 reward on each cartridge you recycle up to 10 in a month. If you know you’ll make a purchase the following month, save your cartridges to earn your $2.

How Much can you Earn in Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards?

The good news is there isn’t a limit on how much you can earn. Before you hit $500 spending, you earn 2% back on most purchases. Once you hit the $500 threshold, you can also get 5% back on paper, ink, toner, and using Office Depot or OfficeMax copy services.

When are Rewards Issued?

Office Depot and OfficeMax Rewards are issued monthly if you earned at least $3 in certificates, which is $150 in spending, but you can increase your earnings by recycling ink/toner or writing up to 3 reviews a month ($2 each).

You’ll see your rewards within 30 days after the end of the calendar month that you earned them. Any rewards less than $3 roll over each month until the end of the quarter. If you haven’t earned enough in a quarter to get a $3 certificate, you lose your points.

Office Depot Rewards Exclusive Deals

As an Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards member, you get access to exclusive deals. This means you get deals that non-members don’t get. The deals are either exclusive prices for members, like a percentage of a computer or TV.

They also offer bonus reward opportunities. For example, 30% back on all ink and toner purchases. This means you’ll make 28% more than your usual earnings if you buy during the special periods.

You can also shop the top deals section for even more savings.

The deals change weekly, so always check back.

Sometimes Office Depot and Office Max have special bonus rewards too. During those times, you are issued a coupon to use for your bonus rewards. If you meet the requirements, the register will issue you a certificate on the spot.

How to Redeem your Rewards?

Office Depot and OfficeMax make it easy to redeem your rewards. You can use them online, on the app, or in-store.

Redeeming Rewards Online

To redeem your certificate online, make sure you’re logged into your account. When you get to the checkout page, you’ll see a button to apply your certificates if you have any. Click the button and you automatically save.

Redeeming Rewards in the Office Depot App

To redeem your certificate in the app, use the same method as you would online. Make sure you’re logged into your account and click ‘yes’ to use your certificate on the purchase.

Redeeming Rewards in the Store

If you want to use your certificate in the store, you can provide your digital certificate to the cashier and they will apply it to your purchase.

What can Rewards NOT be Used On?

You can use your Office Depot Office Max rewards on almost everything except gift cards or prepaid cards. You also cannot use them on backordered items. You can use your certificate up to 3 times per day and you don’t have to use the entire balance in one transaction.

When do Rewards Certificates Expire?

You have up to 60 days after the issuing date to use your Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards certificate. You can find your expiration date by logging into your account or looking for it on your monthly statement sent via email.

FAQs – How do Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Work?

Can you use coupons when you redeem your Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards?

Office Depot and Office Max make it easy to save money in their store. Even if you’re redeeming a reward certificate, you can still use a coupon. The coupons come off first and the reward is like cash, reducing the amount you pay out of pocket.

How do I check my Office Depot Rewards?

To check on your rewards status, log into your account and click on ‘rewards.’ If you have any certificates, you’ll see them there. Office Depot and OfficeMax also email you the rewards when you earn them.

Does Office Depot buy unused ink?

Office Depot doesn’t buy unused ink, but you can recycle the cartridges like you would a used cartridge. You’ll earn $2 for every ink cartridge you recycle and you can recycle up to 10 per month for rewards. (You can recycle as many as you want per month but will only earn rewards on the first 10).

How do I log into Office Depot Rewards?

Once you have an Office Depot or Office Max account, click ‘Log in’ and head to your My Account page. Don’t worry if you can’t remember your password, just click ‘Trouble Logging In’ and they’ll walk you through fixing the problem.

Final Thoughts – Are Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Worth It?

Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards are worth it. It is free to join and even if you only earn the $3 certificate (spending $150 in a quarter), it’s worth it – right? Most people spend over $150 a quarter at Office Depot or Office Max and if you don’t reach the threshold, it doesn’t cost you anything.

I like the special deals you have access to and the chance of earning even a small certificate. If you are loyal to either office store, it’s worth it to give the little information required to start earning rewards.
