Is GapCash Worth It?

If you love shopping at Gap but wish the clothes were a little cheaper, get to know GapCash and how it works. You’ll earn money on your purchases that you can use for future Gap purchases, helping you save money on a brand you love.

Many people wonder, though, is GapCash worth it? You don’t have to pay for the GapCash, but it does require a purchase (sometimes a hefty one), so it’s worth looking into the fine details to determine if it’s worth it for you.

What is GapCash?

GapCash is a coupon you earn when you make a purchase at Gap in-store or online during the GapCash promotion. The coupon will be worth $20 – $50 off your next purchase, but you may only redeem it during the GapCash redemption period.

To earn GapCash, you must meet the spend thresholds, and to spend it, you must use it during the redemption period, but you must also meet the spend thresholds.

It seems like a lot of work and like there are a lot of rules, but in the end, it can save you up to $120 on your Gap purchases.

How Does it Work?

You’ll receive one coupon for your entire purchase during the GapCash promotion. You earn the cash based on the total amount of your purchase.

Gap runs two GapCash promotions. If you buy during the regular promotion and shop IN-STORE, here’s what you’ll earn:

  • Spend $50  – $74.99 – Receive $20 GapCash
  • Spend $75 – $99.99 – Receive $30 GapCash
  • Spend $100 – $124.99 – Receive $40 GapCash
  • Spend $125+ – Receive $50 GapCash

If you’re lucky enough to shop during Double Earn Promotions, you can double the GapCash earned in each category above.

If you shop online, you’ll earn:

  • Spend $50 – $99.99 – Receive $20 GapCash
  • Spend $100 – $149.99 – Receive $40 GapCash
  • Spend $150 – $199.99 – Receive $60 GapCash
  • Spend $200 – $249.99 – Receive $80 GapCash
  • Spend $250 – $299.99 – Receive $100 GapCash
  • Spend $300+ – Receive $120 GapCash

Where can you Earn GapCash?

You can earn GapCash by shopping in Gap, Gap Factory stores, GapBody, GapKids, or babyGap stores. You’ll also earn GapCash if you shop at Gap online during the promotion periods.

How do you Receive Gap Cash?

If you shop in-store at Gap or Gap Factory, you’ll receive your GapCash with your receipt. Make sure not to lose it since it’s like cash. You’ll need it when you come back during the redemption period.

If you shop online, you’ll receive an email with the GapCash coupon within 24 hours of your purchase.

You cannot earn GapCash on certain purchases including:

  • Gift cards
  • Shipping and handling
  • Gift wrap
  • Purchases outside of the promotion

How do you Redeem GapCash?

It doesn’t matter how you earned your GapCash – you can redeem your cash either online or in-store during the redemption period.

Just make sure you’re shopping during the redemption period, which is marked on your coupon. You can redeem up to $120 GapCash in one transaction.

You must spend a specific amount to redeem your GapCash. Here’s what you need to spend either in-store or online.

  • Spend $50 – $74.99 – Redeem $20 GapCash
  • Spend $75 – $99.99 – Redeem $30 GapCash
  • Spend $100 – $124.99 – Redeem $40 GapCash
  • Spend $125 – $149.99 – Redeem $50 GapCash
  • Spend $150 – $199.99 – Redeem $60 GapCash
  • Spend $200 – $249.99 – Redeem $80 GapCash
  • Spend $250 – $299.99 – Redeem $100 GapCash
  • Spend $300 – Redeem $120 GapCash

How do you Redeem GapCash online?

If you shop online, you can redeem GapCash earned by entering the redemption code in the promotions box at checkout. It works just like a coupon and if you meet the spending threshold, you’ll get the entire discount.

Using your GapCash on a Smaller Spend Threshold

Many people have GapCash but don’t spend the required amount to use it so they throw it away. That’s like throwing money out the window.

Here’s a little secret.

Gap will accept GapCash for a lower purchase amount than the threshold, but not for the full amount. For example, if you have $50 GapCash, you must spend $125 – $149.99 to use it. But, if you spend $62.50, you can still use GapCash. Instead of $50 off, you’d receive $25 off since you spent half of what’s required.

Other Ways to Save at Gap

GapCash is just one way to save at Gap. Fortunately, there are many other ways to save when the GapCash promotion isn’t going on. Here are a few more:

Make Note of the Biannual Gap Sale

Twice a year, Gap runs its best promotions during its Gap Sale. The sales usually run in July and December and you can save as much as 40% off your favorite items. Gap also drastically marks down already reduced items to as much as 50% off the lower price.

Earn a Gap Gift Card from ThredUp

If you have Gap clothing you no longer wear – sell it on ThredUp, the online consignment store. If your items sell, you’ll earn a Gap gift card that you can use toward your next purchase.

Snag Free Shipping by Combining Purchases

If you shop at Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, or Athleta, buy everything at once. Since you must spend $50 to get free shipping, you can total up your purchases from all the sites to hit the minimum, saving you money on shopping.

Join Gap GoodRewards

Join Gap GoodRewards to earn one point for every $1 you spend at Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, or Athleta. If you’re a Gap credit cardholder, you’ll earn 5 points for every $1 spent. Every 100 points you earn equals a $1 reward.

Buy Jeans in February

Gap runs its best jeans sale in February. Stock up in February and you’re set for the year or at least until they run the next GapCash promotion.

GapCash FAQs

Can I combine GapCash with other coupons or promotions?

Most offers cannot be combined with GapCash. This includes promotional codes and discount coupons. But, if you have Rewards Card points or a first purchase discount after signing up for a Gap credit card, you can combine them with GapCash.

You also cannot combine an employee discount with GapCash redemption.

Can you use GapCash online?

Yes, you can use GapCash online even if you earned it in-store. It’s easy to redeem – just enter the redemption code on the certificate you received in-store or online.

Do you lose GapCash when you return?

If you return items you purchased with GapCash, you won’t receive the full dollar value back in cash. Gap will reduce your refund the amount of the GapCash you redeemed. For example, if you redeemed $20 in GapCash on a $50 purchase and you return the entire purchase, you’d receive $30 cashback, not $50.

Can you use expired GapCash?

Unfortunately, Gap doesn’t accept expired GapCash. You must use your GapCash coupons within the redemption period or you forfeit the earnings.

What is the difference between Gap Factory and Gap?

Gap Factory isn’t an overstock store for Gap like most people think. Gap creates exclusive casual styles just for its Gap Factory stores. You’ll often find exceptional markdowns at Gap Factory – it’s worth a look.

How do you contact Gap?

If you have a question about your Gap purchase or you have a question about GapCash, call 1-800-427-7895 to talk to a Gap representative. Have your GapCash and receipt handy in case you have to refer to your transaction.

Final Thoughts – Is GapCash Worth It?

You don’t pay for GapCash outright, but to earn it, you must purchase so it’s almost like you’re paying for it.

Is it worth it?

If you are a Gap fanatic, it can be a great time to stock up on the items you need. I’d caution you on stocking up on jeans during the GapCash promotions though. You can often get a better deal during the February Gap jeans sale when the jeans are 40% off.

The problem with the GapCash promotions is most items are at regular prices during that time except for the clearance racks. You’ll spend more to get the GapCash and then have to spend a specific amount again to redeem it – again at the regular price.

If you happen to shop at Gap during the promotion – it can be worth it, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to earn GapCash unless it was necessary.

  1. Thanks for the tips! Everything seem extra expensive at gap these days! I like the tip that I don’t have to try to reach the minimum.
